GREAT GLASS HOUSE AT THE NATIONAL BOTANIC GARDEN OF WALES, CARMARTHENSHIRE, WALES
The dome, designed by Norman Foster and Partners, is the largest single span glasshouse in the world. The structure tilts by seven degrees and faces south to attract maximum sunlight for hundreds of plant species grown in it.
MANCHESTER CIVIL JUSTICE CENTRE, ENGLAND
The building has received many awards for its eco-friendly design. The elongated structure allows for better ventilation and the slender design with glass exterior allows natural sunlight to flood the rooms, reducing the need for artificial lighting during daytime.
THE SHARD, LONDON, ENGLAND
A recent addition to the London skyline, The Shard is also the tallest building in the European Union. The spire-like structure has a total surface area of 600,000 sq. feet (56,000 sq. meters) and is made of 11,000 panes of glass. The viewing decks located on levels 69 and 72 offer stunning views of the historic city.
GRAND LISBOA ENTERTAINMENT CENTER, MACAU, CHINA
The oval entertainment center of the 54-storey Grand Lisboa hotel is made of 12,000 multi-colored pieces of triangle-shaped glass. The project won a Commendation Award at the 2009 Structural Excellence Awards Competition in Hong Kong.
